Fireside makes enjoying your pictures and videos as easy as watching TV. And when you share channels with others, it’s TV-easy for them too.
Share a channel with grandma so it’s easy for her to tune in and watch the kids any time she wants to (and you don’t have to do any work). Or get a channel from your brother or sister so your kids stay connected to their cousins.
The basic Fireside service is free, and we’re currently offering a limited access beta. If you’d like to try Fireside, sign up here and we’ll get you a link as soon as possible.
Step 1: Click on Signup Link
Once you’ve received a link to the app, click the sign up link to get going.
Step 2: Enter your name, email and password
Once your info has been accepted, you’ll receive an email saying your account has been created. It has details and links you can refer back to in the future.
Step 3: Tell Fireside where your photos and videos are
If you’re already signed in to your Google Photos or Dropbox account, you’ll skip this screen and be asked for app permissions (see below). If not, you’ll be asked to sign in to your Google Photos or Dropbox account or to create a new one.
Anyone can create a free Dropbox account that allows storage of up to 2GB of files. This probably won’t be enough for all your photos and videos though, so we suggest the $99/year Dropbox Pro account that allows you to store up to 1TB of files. This almost certainly will cover every photo and video you’ve ever taken and keep you covered for the near term future as well.
If you choose Dropbox, we recommend you install Carousel. It’s an app for your phone from Dropbox that automatically and silently copies the photos and videos you take on your phone to your Dropbox account in the cloud. This way, Fireside always has your latest content and there is nothing for you to remember to do other than take pictures.
Google Photos will allow you to store an unlimited number of photos in a free account, but they do downscale them. If you want to store videos and the highest quality original photos you need to purchase space and then the cost ends up being roughly comparable to a Dropbox Pro account. That said, Google Photos is a great way to try out Fireside service for your entire photo and video library for free. If you do choose Google Photos, be sure you install the mobile app on your phone so your pictures and videos are automatically backed up.
When you click “Allow”, you give Fireside access to the photos and videos in your Google Photos or Dropbox account. We’ll get smart about them and turn them into streaming channels you can easily watch and share. We’ll also stay in sync with your Google Photos or Dropbox account…so when you add photos and videos to Google Photos or Dropbox they should appear in Fireside shortly after. Also, if you delete photos and videos from Google Photos or Dropbox, they will no longer show up in Fireside.
Step 4: If you want video, connect your Google/Youtube account
Video is one of the most compelling aspects of Fireside. In fact, many people in our beta group have told us that Fireside has caused them to default to taking videos over photos on their phones. Videos are just so rich and compelling–and there are not many ways other than Fireside to surface them and make them part of every day life.
We index and get smart about your videos in much the same way we do for your photos. However, the one big difference is that we make a copy of your video and put it in a private location in your Youtube account. When you’re watching Fireside, all your photos are coming directly from the cloud storage provider (e.g. Dropbox or Google Photos) they’re stored with. But, when we play one of your videos, we play the copy of your video via Youtube.
If you are happy only having photos, you can skip this step and come back to it later.
If you aren’t logged in to Google you’ll be asked to log in. If you are logged in, you’ll be asked to select which Google account you want to connect with Fireside. This is the account Fireside will put a copy of your videos in.
Since Fireside is uploading videos to your Youtube account, you need to authorize Fireside to manage your account. Fireside does not modify or delete videos in your account, we only upload copies of videos from your cloud storage account.
That’s it! Have a cup of coffee while we curate your channels and get them ready to stream and share
If you have a lot of photos and videos, this can take several hours. We’ll send you an email when Fireside is ready to play. Also, if you leave the page below open in your your browser, it will automatically start playing once it’s ready.
